Sutherland

West Sutherland

The great prize in this area is the weevil Otiorhynchus morio [RDB I] (Curculionidae), which in the British Isles has only ever been found in this vice-county but was last recorded in 1901 on the shores of Loch Assynt. Adults are probably to be found on plant roots, but very little is known about this species.

The boreal leaf beetle Phyllodecta polaris [RDB3] (Chrysomelidae) is found on mountain sides in the county, where it is associated with Dwarf Willow Salix herbacea and possibly other montane willows. Adults should be sought from May to September. The species is otherwise known only from Ross & Cromarty in the British Isles.
